APRIL TROUT AND WINDS HAVE ARRIVED

by Captain Steve Himel on 04/17/12

APRIL TROUT AND WINDS HAVE ARRIVED –

The spring trout run in the lake was temporarily suspended for the last four days due to the April winds that seem to put a hold on fishing every spring.  The good news is that the fish are still there and will be hungry once things settle down a little.  The best catches of the year were coming in before the heavy winds last weekend.  The bridges were lined with boats and most were catching fish. Trollers were doing well as well as those tossing plastic. On my trips, I had the best success tossing matrix lemon with 3/8 jig heads away from the pilings on a falling tide. The trout were a little smaller last week with more males than the previous weeks. This means that the schools of small shrimp are now in the lake with the school trout following. Everything is set for a great season!

I will be starting my Lake Pontchartrain charters on May 2 when live bait will be available.  We will be fishing live shrimp Carolina rigged and under sliding corks for a mixed box of fish including trout, flounder, drum, reds, white trout and sheepshead.  I offer four and six hour trips on the lake.  I am also booking Delacroix trips beginning June 1.  We will be fishing Black Bay and Breton Sound with live bait around the islands and rigs.  You can visit my website at www.marshland-adventures for rates and information or give me call at (504) 458-8737.  Our trips include live bait and fish cleaning at no extra charge.
