28 Trout in the Wind!

by Captain Steve Himel on 02/11/13

On Saturday I took a scouting trip with a friend trying to locate some early season specks. The wind was 15 mph out of the east, so we opted to fish some canals, bayous and protected marsh areas near the Rigolets. We started in 10 - 15 feet of water thinking that the fish would be deep with the water temps in the high 50's. After about a half hour without a bite, we moved a little shallower up on the flats in 4-6 feet of water, and that was it! We started catching trout. We were using Deadly Dudley Jrs terror tail in blue moon with a chartreuse tail on a quarter oz. unpainted jig head. Most of the strikes came on the initial fall - watch your line when it is falling. Other strikes would come after hopping it off the bottom during the fall. We worked one area over and over again once we found the bite and pattern. We had 28 keeper trout up to 2 lbs. one red and one bass. We caught at least 6 other reds under 16'. The secret right now is to try different depths until you locate them and stay with it. If you would like to get in on this action. Give me a call. I am also booking spring trophy trips on the bridges. I use hand caught live croakers for the monsters. I am also booking summer trout trips to Black Bay and Breton Sound out of Delacroix, Give me call at (504) 458-8737 or check out my website at www.marshland-adventures.com.
